In the six days at Petty Sessions, Mr Brindley was able to discredit important evidence from Mrs Thompson in the case of the Jack Thompson hold-up. The charge was dismissed.

With the Mort’s Dock hold-up and shooting, the only concrete prosecution evidence was from a man who claimed he could identify Mears as the masked man standing by the dock gate. Under cross-examination by Brindley, the witness claimed he had identified Mears by his eyes. Brindley moved so that he was standing between him and Mears.

My lawyer said, ‘What is there about Mears’s eyes that enables you to be so sure they are the ones you saw at the hold-up?’
